Face coverings required per NYS DOH

Dear Avoca Parents/Guardians,

As we continue to follow the COVID-related health and safety guidelines set forth by the NYS Dept. of Health, we will also continuously adjust our own internal guidance to adhere to any changes or updates. The NYS Dept. of Health issued a new COVID-19 guidance document on April 9, 2021 which requires all students, staff and visitors in or on school property to wear a face mask at all times.

Therefore beginning Monday, April 26, all Avoca students, staff and visitors must wear an acceptable face covering at all times except when they are eating or drinking. While students and staff have been wearing face coverings all year when they were unable to meet the 6-foot social distancing guidelines, we are now required to have face masks worn at all times even when 6 feet or more apart.

Per the NYS Dept. of Health guidance: “Acceptable face coverings include but are not limited to cloth-based face coverings (e.g. homemade sewn, quick cut, bandana) and surgical masks that cover both the mouth and nose.”

We are asking everyone to come to school with their own cloth masks. Staff and students will be reminded upon entry into buildings that masks are required. In situations where a family cannot afford a mask for their children, or if a child forgets to bring a mask to school on a given day, we will provide them a disposable mask. Each school bus and school building will have extra masks available should they get lost, soiled, forgotten, etc.

Your cooperation in having your child wear a mask to school is greatly appreciated and will help us keep our community safe, our buildings open, and our students and staff back in school full time.

Thank you for your help in getting us through the last 9 weeks of school and off to an exciting and relaxing summer.

Sincerely,

Stephen Saxton, Superintendent
