    A Message from Mrs. Buisch

Thinking back to last weeks’ list of Empathy busters in today’s world, let’s focus on how technology has changed our interactions with others.  Consider this: Human connection leads to empathy.  Technology and social media decrease human connection. Therefore, we can see where this is leading.

Borba indicates that technology is one reason today’s kids are the loneliest and least empathetic generation with the highest mental health problems on record.  (Chapter 2, pg.79) The equation is easy: decrease screen time and increase face to face communication.  Challenge for the week: Add up your child’s screen time.

Here are some suggestions as to how to help your children increase human connection:

    • Set clear limits on screen time and stick to it.  Keep mealtimes, homework, family time and bedtime - screen free - for children and adults.

    • Collaborate with other parents to have similar screen time rules

    • Encourage and plan face to face playdates and social time for your children

    • Allow your children to be involved with organized activities that help foster collaboration and team building such as sports, scouting, church groups, dance classes, etc
