    A Message from Mrs. Buisch

Having a hobby is a great way for your child to learn to use their unstructured time productively.  When we think of hobbies from our childhood, we may have a very different list than if we were to ask children today.  Technology and “plugged in” activities and jam-packed schedules of activities have replaced leisure reading, arts and crafts, collecting something of interest, taking nature walks and jigsaw puzzles.

Hobbies can become a solace when things fall apart in our lives. (Borba, Chapter 1, page 62)  When you find something that your child deeply cares about, it can be a lifelong activity to bring relaxation, nurture strengths and self care.   It can fill unstructured time when you might otherwise hear, “There is nothing to do!”

Challenge of the Week:  Think about what your child’s hobbies are. If you aren’t sure if your child truly has a hobby, ask questions such as, “What do you like to do in your free time?” “What is something you might be curious to learn more about?” Once you have a direction, provide opportunities and materials to get them started.
