Opening of School - School Safety Protocols

Avoca Central School is committed to opening the 2021-2022 school year with the safety of all students and staff foremost in all decision making. As such, the following protocols will be implemented and enforced. Should local Steuben County or NYS DOH guidance or mandates change, updates will be applied accordingly. For any item not directly addressed in the Avoca CSD Opening of Schools Protocol document, Steuben County Department of Health recommendations will be followed.

    Consistent and Correct Mask Use

Effective immediately, in accordance with the Commissioner's Determination issued pursuant to 10 NYCRR 2.60, any person over the age of 2 (including all students, personnel, teachers, administrators, contractors, and visitors) must wear masks at all times indoors in P-12 school buildings, regardless of vaccination status. People with medical or developmental conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask may be exempted from mask requirements, as documented by a medical provider. People do not need to wear masks when eating, drinking, singing, or playing a wind instrument; when masks are removed for these purposes, individuals must be spaced six feet apart. All mask requirements must be applied consistently with any state and federal law (e.g., Americans with Disabilities Act) A five minute mask break, or snack/water break will be provided once every hour for PK-6 grades, and once every period for 7-12 students. Mask breaks may be provided outside when weather permits. Any request for medical exemption of the masking requirement will be reviewed by our district Medical Director. The district Medical Director will determine if an exemption and appropriate accommodations are allowable.

    Physical Distancing

A minimum three feet of social distancing in all classroom setups Pre K- 12. While in general music, chorus and instrumental band students will be spaced 6 feet apart to the greatest extent possible. Seating charts will be maintained. This includes general music, lunch, chorus, and instrumental band classes. General music, chorus and instrumental band classes will be held in the largest spaces available in order to maximize physical distancing.

    Transportation

Masks are required for everyone on school transportation at all times. Roof hatches and windows will be open if outside temp is greater than 40 degrees. Assigned seats and seating charts will be utilized. Per the CDC, physical distancing is NOT required on school buses. We will continue with daily cleaning protocols from last year including disinfection following each bus run. Students are asked to continue to sit with family/household members whenever possible.

    Health Screenings

There will be no daily or weekly on-campus health screenings required. Parents should screen students at home and students exhibiting any symptoms should be kept home. Staff should self-screen before entering the building and should stay home when not feeling well.

Update Student Contact Information – Parent Portal

We will not be sending home a Demographic Verification sheet this year. To update your contact information, please log-in to Parent Portal, and click on your child’s name. From there, under their photo, click on Contact Verification. Please update any fields that need to be changed, and answer all questions at the bottom of the page. If you have not yet registered for a Parent Portal account, you may do so at https://parentportal.wnyric.org/Login.aspx.

    Back to School Forms

Most of our back-to-school forms will also be completed online this year. Please log-in to FamilyID and complete the Avoca Central School Back to School Forms online. If this is your child’s first year in Avoca, you will also need to complete the Avoca Computer Use/AUP on FamilyID. These forms can be accessed online at https://www.familyid.com/organizations/avoca-central-school-avoca-prattsburgh-athletics

    Homecoming Week

This year, our Homecoming Activities will mirror with Prattsburgh School. Our theme for Homecoming Week is Superheroes! The daily themes are as follows:

    • Monday, September 27th - Wacky Hair Day
    • Tuesday, September 28th - Twin Day
    • Wednesday, September 29th - Superhero Cape Day
    • Thursday, September 30th - Red, White & Blue America Day
    • Friday, October 1st - School Spirit Day (Seniors: Toga Day)

There are a variety of activities planned for the week. On Thursday, we will host the annual Community Color Run beginning at 5:30pm. On Friday we will have the Spud Games at the Cohocton fields. Girls Varsity Soccer begins at 5:00pm, and Boys Varsity Soccer begins at 7:00pm. Immediately following the games, there will be a "Bond"Fire in Prattsburgh. On Saturday, there are pulled pork dinners available at Prattsburgh between 11am to 1pm. Pre-Sales will begin soon. (Funds raised go to Music and Drama.) On Saturday night Avoca will host the combined Homecoming Dance, tentatively scheduled from 7-9pm for middle school (gr 6-8), and 9-11pm for high school (gr 9-12). Please note that with the everchanging developments with Covid-19, events may need to be adjusted.

    School Supplies

This year, the district will continue to provide most of the required school supplies to students. You will not be receiving a list of needed supplies to purchase to begin the year. Students will be provided with the necessary supplies for each of their classes by their homeroom teacher. While we will be providing students with the needed supplies to start to the year, we will not necessarily replace those items if they become lost or damaged. For this reason, I encourage you to have a conversation regarding the importance of properly caring for the supplies provided.

    Student Breakfast & Lunch

Continuing this year, all students will be eligible for free breakfast and lunch. As a part of this program, we require all families to complete a Household Income Eligibility Form. This form will be sent home the first day of school. À la carte items will still be available for purchase.

    Walking and Drop-Off Entrance

The entrance for students that are dropped-off or walking to school will be the main entrance near the flagpole. The entrance near the cafeteria will not be open in the morning. We will be streaming all students through the front main entrance. Students coming in from the bus will continue to enter through the side door nearest the bus loop.

    Late Bus Changes

This year, we will bring back the late bus run. Beginning this year the late bus will leave Avoca School at 5:00pm. Students will board the late bus outside of the Commons. The late bus will begin on the first day of school.

    Commons After-School

The Commons will be open to students after-school until 6:30pm. Students that need a place to stay before or after their clubs or sports practices may go to the Commons. Students may also stay after-school in the Commons for a place to get homework done, and use the internet. If students need a ride home, the late bus leaves at 5:00.

    Senior Photos

Senior photos are due to Mrs. Keesey by October 15th. Seniors may submit their photos electronically, by emailing Mrs. Keesey a high-resolution image to tkeesey@avocacsd.org. They can also be submitted via a thumb-drive, CD, or on a print. (No names printed on the front, and please do not write on the back of the print, as it may bleed.) Students may choose to use the school picture day photo as their senior portrait.
