Avoca parent survey informs reopening planning
July 16-20, 2020 Avoca parents were asked to provide input on schools reopening this fall. The district administered an online survey asking questions about parents’ comfort level with kids returning to school with the State Education Dept. (SED) Dept. of Health (DOH) and CDC requirements in place.
Approximately 245 families responded to the survey. Slightly more than half (51%) of respondents indicated they would be comfortable sending their child back to school in the fall if confirmed cases of COVID-19 remain low. Many respondents also indicated they are concerned about mask-wearing, social distancing and vulnerable populations.
Families asked a number of questions regarding reopening that the district is working to address in the reopening plan, set to be submitted to the state and posted on the website by Aug. 7.
Full results to the survey can be found here.
FROM THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE
On Monday, July 13, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the threshold criteria for reopening schools. The Governor will use these criteria to make a final decision on the reopening of schools for the Southern Tier and the rest of New York State. This decision is expected to be made between Aug. 1-7.
New York state’s school reopening decisions will be made using these criteria:
- Open: Schools can open in a region in phase 4 where there is an infection rate at or below 5% (14-day average)
- Close: Schools will close if the regional infection rate rises above 9% (7-day average) Read the guidance document.
Pictured below is an infographic that outlines the governor's criteria.
FROM THE NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
On Thursday, July 16, the New York State Education Department released guidance to help schools and school districts as they plan to reopen, whether that occurs in person, remotely, or in a combination of the two. Read the guidance document.
