New York State on PAUSE
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced during his April 16th press briefing that New York state will remain “on pause” through May 15th to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. As part of this order, schools throughout the state will remain closed through May 15. The governor could extend the closure again if he feels it is necessary to contain the virus.
Marking Period 3 & 4 Grades
The 3rd marking period began on February 3rd and was scheduled to end on April 17th. Students were in school for the period of February 3rd through March 13th before we shifted to the extended dismissal and at-home learning. All grades collected prior to March 13 will be used to calculate 3rd marking period averages including the K-5 standards-based report card. Students in Grades 6-12 will have until the end of the day (3:30 pm) on Friday, May 1st to turn in any back assignments or revisions from this portion of the 3rd marking period. We anticipate closing the gradebook on May 1st for the 3rd marking period, and mailing home report cards on Friday, May 8th.
For the fourth marking period, students will be assessed on a 1,2,3 scale. This is true for both their overall fourth marking period grade, as well as assignment grades. The scale is as follows: 1 - Not meeting standards/failing; 2 - meeting standards; 3 - exceeding standards/excellence. ACE (college-credit) courses will continue to receive a numeric grade. Students are expected to continue with their at-home learning, and keep up with their assigned coursework.
Materials Distribution Round 3
Our next round of materials distribution will be Tuesday, May 5th from 11:00am-5:00pm on the bus loop side of the building. Despite Governor Cuomo ordering schools to remain closed through Friday, May 15th, as a precaution, we are preparing enough class material to take us through Friday, May 29th.
Senior Trip Cancelled
The ongoing concerns regarding the Covid-19 pandemic leave many questions for our senior class. One of the events that many students have been planning for was the Senior Trip. Sadly, due to extended travel restrictions, and out of an abundance of safety for our students and staff, we have decided to cancel the Senior Trip to Virginia Beach. Read the full update here.
New York State on PAUSE extends through Friday, May 15th. Our Prom was scheduled for Saturday, May 16th. While this date is not practical, we are weighing options for the prom. We are currently working to decide if the event will be postponed, or cancelled. We will make a decision and communicate it out to families next Friday, May 1st.
We have had some concerns from students about technology while at-home learning. Now, a desingated email address has been set-up for contact about technology issues. Students who are experiencing technology-related issues can now email studenttechsupport@avocacsd.
