Message from the Superintendent

  • Welcome to the Avoca Central School District’s website.  I hope that while you are visiting our website that you find it easy to navigate and are able to easily find what you are looking for.  While here why not learn a little more about Avoca Central School….

Avoca Central School is a district of approximately 455 students in Universal Pre-Kindergarten Programs through 12th Grade.  Our students are housed in one school building which centers around the original main building built in 1938.  Our School District is predominately rural and encompasses 92 square miles within Steuben County in the townships of Avoca, Bath, Cohocton, Fremont, Howard, Prattsburgh and Wheeler.  Our school districts annual budget is $12,060,514.00.  A Board of Education of five members oversees the operation of the District.  Like many small communities Avoca Central School is the hub of the community.  Our school hosts not only school activities but many local community events throughout the year.

We have fantastic class size averages at Avoca Central.  At the elementary level there are 17 students per class while at the Middle High School level it is slightly smaller with 15 students per class.  Our High School students have the opportunity to participate in a rigorous core curriculum, electives, College ACE classes and/or participate in Career and Technical Education Courses through the Greater Southern Tier BOCES.  It is because of our small size that I believe we are able to deliver a quality education from an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and caring faculty and staff.  As the requirements for education continue to expand, we are very fortunate to have staff that are dedicated to helping students learn and develop as they face the challenges and rigor of new Common Core Learning Standards.

Although a rural school technology abounds in each of our classrooms.  As a result of excellent fiscal planning and previous capital projects along with an enthusiastic Technology Committee, all of our classrooms have wireless networking, internet connected computers and interactive smart board technology.  We have a long distance learning lab in addition to 2 computer labs for student learning to occur.  Our buildings have enhanced security with 360 degree internal and external camera coverage and either fob or intercom access to the building.

We are fortunate to have a proud and supportive community that values education as well as a fine facility in which to educate our students.  All of these ingredients add up to create an environment for our students to be successful.  We are fortunate to have a school district that offers the many opportunities that we do to enhance student’s lives and their futures.

We look forward to the challenge of maintaining our school’s strengths and improving on areas that will enhance our abilities to meet the needs of our students in the future.

Thank you for visiting...Sincerely, Superintendent Stephen Saxton
